When this unusual problem occurs it means the up limit switch probably needs to be moved away from the motor unit. There may be two nuts on one track. Check if the safe t beams red led light is flashing. Set a safety ladder under the garage door opener. When the opener reverses the screw turns the opposite way and the nut travels back.

Some models have two screws labeled. Additionally a simple rebooting can help.
